[edit] Twins in America - Carova BeachCurrituck County's northern beaches around Corolla and Carova Beach have been described by USA Weekend as one of the 10 best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast. North of Corolla, North Carolina, for 12 miles to the Virginia line, lies one of the last stretches of fairly undeveloped barrier beaches on the Outer Banks. Some families live here year round, but it is a 4-wheel drive haven for vacationers that would like to get away from the normal traffic of the OBX. Carova is located on the barrier island between the Currituck Sound and Atlantic Ocean, and the only access is a bumpy 4-wheel drive up the beach. There are no paved roads. Carova Beach is 12 miles of state and federally owned land, in which lies, vacation homes, old coastguard stations, a wildlife refuge and wetlands. One of the most interesting things about Carova Beach is its wildlife. It's most known for its wild horses that roam freely about the island, giving visitors lots of great photo opportunities. It also protects the last remaining habitat of the endangered or threatened piping plover, loggerhead sea turtle and seabeach amaranth.
